Pakistan celebrates the March 25, 1992, victory when Khan led the team to defeat England by 22 runs at Melbourne Cricket Ground, their only World Cup title. Now imprisoned in Adiala Jail since August 2023 on over 180 cases including corruption, Khan draws parallels from supporters to that resilient leadership. His UK-based sons, Sulaiman and Kasim, spoke at the UN Human Rights Council’s 61st session this week, highlighting inhumane conditions, denied visits since late 2022, and broader issues like military trials for civilians, while calling for medical care amid PTl’s #FreelmranKhan campaign.

The PTA clarified that any blocking of VPNs is carried out lawfully, following the directives of the Government of Pakistan and within the established legal framework.
The PTA highlighted that VPNs can be whitelisted through an automated process available on both the PTA and Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) websites. This process is designed to support and safeguard IT services and online businesses in the country, ensuring that legitimate users can continue their operations without any interruptions.
This statement from the PTA follows comments made by Chairman Major General ® Hafeez Rahman. On Thursday, he informed the Senate Standing Committee on IT & Telecom that the PTA has started the whitelisting of VPNs to prevent unauthorized services from operating in the country.
He also noted that while VPNs could potentially be blocked nationwide, such a measure would negatively impact businesses.

Up against it

“We deeply regret that we can’t provide any international cricket at home to our fans this year, but we were always up against it with our entire home international programme coming in the first half of the season,” said Cricket Ireland chief executive Warren Deutrom.

"We regard our matches as postponed until further notice, and I know Cricket Ireland is not alone in looking forward to the day that the Full Members can get around a table with the ICC to work out how, and if, we can fit everything in the current FTP cycle.

"With regards to the three ODIs against England scheduled for September, discussions with the ECB are ongoing.

"We will try to be as flexible as possible around these - as they are currently set to be our first fixtures as part of the new World Cup Super League, however, numerous challenges have to be resolved - notably around timing, bio-secure venues and quarantine requirements for players who travel.

“We will continue to work with the ECB on trying to make these fixtures happen, but the issues involved will take a little while to work through.”

Stone-age hunter-gatherers lived on the Potohar plateau and within the Soan Valley in northern Punjab 300,000 or more years ago. Excavations on the Balochistan plateau show a more advanced culture which flourished from 4000 to 2000 BCE. At Kot Diji within the Khairpur district, an early bronze age culture developed during this period. These early civilisations reached their peak within the Indus valley cities, of which Harappa is that the most notable. These societies had mastered city planning and pictographic writing.

In 327 BCE Alexander the good invaded together with his Macedonian army. Later, Mauryans from India ruled the northern Punjab area, to get replaced by Bactrian Greeks from Afghanistan and central Asian tribes. Different religions prevailed in turn: Buddhism (under the Mauryans), Hinduism and, with Arab conquest within the eighth century, Islam.

Two main principalities emerged under Arab rule, that of al- Mansurah which of Multan. The Ghaznarid sultans gained ascendancy in Punjab within the 11th century. the next ascendancy of the Moghuls, who originated in Central Asia, lasted from 1536 to 1707; their rule lingered nominally until 1857. They established a classy imperial administration and left an upscale legacy of forts and walled cities, gardens and gateways, mosques and tombs.

In the early 17th century European traders arrived on the subcontinent. Through the Malay Archipelago Company, British became the dominant force. After the unsuccessful uprising against Britain of 1857, British took direct control. Slowly a national Muslim identity emerged, championed by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan (1817–89). The All India Muslim League was founded in 1907.

As the subcontinent moved towards independence, it became clear that Hindu and Muslim interests couldn’t be reconciled. The campaign to determine an independent Muslim state came to prominence within the 1920s and 30s. it had been led by the philosopher and poet Mohammad Iqbal and Mohammad Ali Jinnah.

Pakistan was created, as an Islamic state, out of the partition of the UK’s Indian Empire, at independence in August 1947. It originally consisted of two parts, Pakistan (now Pakistan) and Bangladesh (now Bangladesh), separated by 1,600 km of Indian territory. Partition was followed by war with India over Kashmir and therefore the mass migration of Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs to resettle within the new borders, an upheaval which led to violence, loss and death on an outsized scale. With the arrival of Indian Muslims and departure of Pakistan’s Hindus and Sikhs, Pakistan became an almost entirely Muslim society. Jinnah, who is honoured because the Quaid-i-Azam, or great leader, died in 1948.

In 1956, Pakistan became a federal republic. it’s been under military rule for long periods. Its first Prime Minister, Liaquat Ali Khan, was assassinated in 1951. In 1958, law was declared and political parties abolished. General (later Field Marshal) Ayub Khan became President in 1960 and allowed a sort of guided ‘basic democracy’. However, failure to win the 1965 war against India and accusations of nepotism and corruption undermined his position. within the east, the Awami League of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman voiced the grievances of the Bengali population. Ayub Khan resigned in 1969 and power was appropriated by General Yahya Khan, who in December 1970 held the primary national elections in independent Pakistan.

Mujib and therefore the Awami League won an electoral majority in Pakistan’s election on a platform demanding greater autonomy for Bangladesh . At an equivalent time Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) gained a majority within the West. Despite Mujib’s victory, he was prevented by the Pakistan authorities from becoming Prime Minister of the combined state and therefore the Awami League then issued their own plans for a replacement constitution for an independent state within the East. As a results of the military intervention that ensued, war broke call at the eastern region in 1971; the Indian army intervened in support of the Bengalis; Pakistan forces withdrew and Bangladesh became an independent state. In 1972 Pakistan withdrew from the Commonwealth but rejoined in 1989.

Under a replacement constitution introduced in 1973, Bhutto became Prime Minister. He undertook agrarian reform and therefore the refore the nationalisation of huge sections of industry and the financial sector. In July 1977 the military , under General Zia ul-Haq, intervened within the urban unrest. Zia declared law and arrested Bhutto who was convicted, after a controversial trial, of conspiring to murder a political opponent. Despite international appeals, he was hanged in April 1979. Zia promised elections within 90 days, but ruled without them until his death. He assumed the presidency and began a programme of Islamisation. law and therefore the ban on political parties were lifted in 1985, Bhutto’s daughter Benazir returned from exile to steer the PPP and Zia died during a plane crash in August 1988.

Elections in November 1988 brought the PPP to power in coalition with the Mohajir Qaumi Movement (MQM). However, in October 1989 the MQM left the coalition and in August 1990 Bhutto was dismissed by the President Ghulam Ishaque Khan and charged with corruption. The National Assembly was dissolved and a caretaker leader installed until Islami Jamhoori Ittehad led by Nawaz Sharif won a decisive election victory in October 1990. Sharif pursued economic reforms and privatisation and instituted Sharia (Islamic) law until 1993 when President and Prime Minister resigned struggling from the military, making way for fresh elections which brought Benazir Bhutto back to power by alittle majority.

In November 1996, President Sardar Farooq Khan Leghari, prompted by the military supreme headquarters and opposition leaders, used the eighth amendment to the constitution, and dissolved the National Assembly, bringing down the Bhutto government and alleging corruption, financial incompetence, and human rights violations. New elections were held in February 1997. The Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) – previously the most component of the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad – won 134 seats within the National Assembly and Sharif became Prime Minister. Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party retained only 18 seats. In April 1997, Sharif was ready to gain the PPP’s support to realize the two- thirds majority necessary to repeal the eighth amendment, ending the President’s ability to dissolve the National Assembly. He also took over from the President the facility to appoint Supreme Court judges and military chiefs-of-staff.

In October 1999, Sharif ordered the dismissal of Army Chief of Staff General Pervez Musharraf, and refused permission to land for the commercial aircraft during which he was returning to Karachi (from a politician visit to Sri Lanka). the military countermanded the Prime Minister’s orders and immediately seized power, dismissing the govt and arresting Sharif. Musharraf justified his actions as necessary to revive both the economy and therefore the deteriorating political situation. Pending the restoration of democracy the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) suspended Pakistan from the councils of the Commonwealth.

Kashmir

The dispute with India over Kashmir escalated sharply in 1999, when militants with Pakistani military support crossed the road of Control at Kargil and engaged in major battles with Indian forces. quite 1,000 people were killed within the fighting. In July 1999, Pakistan finally agreed to withdraw from Indian-controlled territory, but the state of tension, which had been heightened by the nuclear testing of 1998 (India had detonated five nuclear devices on 11 and 13 May 1998 and Pakistan responded with six on 28 and 30 May), persisted.

At the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, in 2001 President General Pervez Musharraf attended a summit in India, that specialize in their dispute over Kashmir. Although there was no substantive outcome, this first face-to-face meeting between leaders of the 2 countries since 1999 was characterised by a replacement interest on each side in seeking a resolution to the present long- standing problem. However, by May 2002 India had mobilised a huge army along the road of Control and therefore the two countries were again on the brink of war.

Tension eased considerably in October 2002 when India reduced its number of troops along the road of Control; diplomatic relations were restored in August 2003 and a ceasefire along the road of Control was agreed and took effect from 26 November 2003. Peace talks between India and Pakistan began in 2004, marking a historic advance in relations between the 2 countries. The talks led to the restoration of communication links and a variety of confidence-building measures, including co- ordinated relief efforts within the aftermath of the October 2005 earthquake.

Constitutionally, the Prime Minister is the chief adviser to President of Pakistan on critical matters and plays an influential role in appointment in each branch of the military leadership also as ensuring the control of the military through chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff . Powers of the Prime Minister have significantly grown with a fragile system of the check and balance by each branch. The position was absent during years of 1960–73 and 1977–85 thanks to imposed law . In each of those periods, the junta led by the President had the powers of the Prime Minister.

The incumbent and current holder during this position is Imran Khan, elected during this capacity after the nationwide general elections held in August 2018.

Amir Liaquat, the host of a private TV program ‘Jive Pakistan’, had invited Pakistan’s leading actor Adnan Siddiqui to his show.

On one occasion during the show, Amir Liaquat addressing Adnan Siddiqui said that whoever you work with outside the country dies. He told Adnan Siddiqui that he saved the lives of two people, Rani Mukherjee and Bipasha Basu.

Aamir Liaquat said that Adnan Siddiqui has recently refused to act in two films in which the two actresses were cast as heroines.

Prior to this statement, he referred to well-known Bollywood actors Irfan Khan and Sri Devi with whom Adnan Siddiqui had worked in the past.

It may be recalled that Sri Devi died of a heart attack on February 25, 2018 while Irfan Khan passed away on April 29, 2020.

However, Adnan Siddiqui said that he was deeply saddened by the demise of Sri Devi and Irfan Khan and in reply to Aamir Liaquat said, “It will be a joke for you but not a joke for me.”

In a statement issued after the show on the social networking site Twitter, Adnan Siddiqui wrote, "It is very inappropriate to make fun of those who have passed away. Not only him (Aamir Liaqat) and I but our The country was presented in the wrong way.

The video of the show went viral on social media and users also criticized Aamir Liaquat for his controversial statement.

Commenting on Aamir Liaqat’s apology, a user said, “Who doesn’t like it when someone apologizes, but does the forgiveness of a person who makes the same mistake over and over again have any meaning?”

While users on social media seemed to appreciate Adnan Siddiqui’s behavior, other users also raised the question of why private TV channels recruit Aamir Liaquat knowing his controversial history.
Amir Liaqat and controversy, with a bra

Amir Liaquat Hussain has been issued notices by PEMRA several times for sharing hateful material in his program, but the courts have also taken notice of his statements several times.

PEMRA had on January 26, 2017 banned the private TV program ‘Aise Nahin Chale Ga’ due to various complaints.

It is to be noted that the host of this program Amir Liaqat had made a hate speech against Mir Shakeel-ur-Rehman, the owner of private TV channel Geo and others, disregarding the orders of the Supreme Court.

Amir Liaquat Hussain was indicted by the Supreme Court of Pakistan on November 7, 2018.

In the past, the Islamabad High Court had also banned Aamir Liaquat Hussain from making hate speeches in a TV program, not only from his program but also from inviting him as an observer in any program.

What this recent controversy and past incidents have in common is that Amir Liaquat Hussain still apologized.

PEMRA should take notice of this statement

Despite Amir Liaquat’s apology, consumers are demanding the Pakistan Media and Regulatory Authority to take notice of Aamir Liaquat’s statement.

Hanna Lake is within the hills on the brink of where the Urak Valley begins, 17 kilometres (11 mi) east from Quetta city.[2] The reservoir was constructed in 1894 during British Colonial era on the land of local tribesmen, and is one among the most attractions within the city. It forms an excellent historical bridge wall between two mountains, the depths like battlements of a fort, for the storing of water.
Features

Hanna Lake is one among the foremost visited and accessible lakes in Balochistan. there’s a lakeside restaurant with picnic tables shaded by pine trees at the top of the river, where families can enjoy the food and weather. On the eastern side of the lake stands the Hayat Durrani Water Sports Academy (HDWSA), the primary and only rowing, canoeing, kayaking and sailing training and championships organising centre in Balochistan Province, with provision of rough swimming facility.[4]
History

In 1894[citation needed], the tiny action dam Surrpull (Red Bridge) was constructed on the most Urak road to regulate flooding, and divert water, coming catastrophically from snow melt and rain the Zarghoon Ghar and Murddar Mountains Koh-i-Murdaar streams, into Hanna Lake through its main canal.

Over a century old in 1908, this lake was cover a neighborhood of 818 acres with a holding capacity of over 220 million gallons of water and a depth of 49 feet (15 m).In 1973 [5] an important flood destroyed the Murdar Mountains recharge linked canal on the thanks to Surrpull, near Spin Kaarrez road, which has not been (Restored) reconstructed till date.

Presently, in May 2016 an important flood filled this small action dam Surrpull with mud and stones. Accordingly, all the streams and flood waters are going waste and there’s no chance to manage water conservancy to Hanna Lake without the restoration, desilting of surrpull and both main canals. On the opposite hand the water level in Hanna Lake is falling critically low, hence endangering the natural ecosystem, the local wild life, the environment of the environment , and native peoples, along side many migrated birds and thousands of fish. the longer term of athletic activities like rowing and canoeing is additionally in peril . it’s possible that the Hanna Lake could be fully dried, like in 1999 to January 2005, and in 2010.

The environmental scientists, Speleologists and therefore the Conservationists are watching the longer term of the lake in its most dangerous condition. the present harmful environmental situation will badly affect the natural eco system, environment, and underground water level of the environment . However, the tiny action dam surpull was locally restored / desilted in February 2019, with the help of Hashim Khan Ghalzai, secretary P&D, and Hayatullah Khan Durrani C.E, HDWSA. Since then the flood rain from the Zarghoon mountains has been continuously coming to Hanna Lake, and therefore the water level has risen by up to 50%.
Hayatullah Khan Durrani established Hayat Durrani Water Sports Academy (HDWSA) on the eve of 14 August 1986 Pakistan Independence-Day the Balochistan’s first and only Rowing, Canoeing, Kayaking, Sailing, rough swimming and boating academy where all such facilities regarding Rowing, Canoeing, Kayaking, Sailing, rough swimming training, events equipment’s and boating provides voluntary freed from cost to the youth members at Hanna Lake.[6]

On 6 July 1990, 40 people were killed and eight injured when an overcrowded local tourists boat capsized in Hanna Lake. Most of the victims were on holiday. Another boat was wont to rescue the victims.[7]
Present day

This channel nowadays needs repairs and is wasting water and recently the Hanna Lake has been fully dried since August 2016 causing killing of thousands of fish and therefore the way forward for the canoe Kayak and rowing National and International level is popping in to dark now. there’s also a water channel which was constructed at an equivalent time by British to convert the snow and rain water near Spin Kaarez,[8] coming from Murdar Mount, as surplus for filling the water during this lake. The channel was destroyed by an important arrive 1976 and has still not been re-constructed. The loss of the snow and rain water was wasted causing Hanna Lake to completely dry up between 1999 and January 2005. the govt of Balochistan did nothing for the restoration of water level at Hanna lake but the Hanna Lake Development Authority (HLDA) the custodians of Hanna Lake and HDWSA officials had full efforts for the restoration of arrival of water through the excess canal to Hanna Lake.
Dry lake

From years 2000–2010 Hanna Lake dried up and therefore the natives along side many migrated birds were in trouble.[9]
Full lake
However, in 2011 the lake re-filled and once more gave rise to flora and fauna in its environment. The turquoise waters of the lake provide an upscale contrast to the sandy brown of the hills within the background. One can promenade on the terraces or hire a ship and paddle on the lake and around the island within the middle
[But] world media headlines [always] send things off the rails”.[4] The country is geographically and ethnically diverse, and has a number of historical and cultural heritage sites. The upsurge in tourism in the past few years has been aided by the Government of Pakistan’s recent decision to end mandatory No Objection Certificates for foreign tourists seeking to visit certain parts of the country.[5]

In 2018, the British Backpacker Society ranked Pakistan as the world’s top adventure travel destination, describing the country as “one of the friendliest countries on earth, with mountain scenery that is beyond anyone’s wildest imagination.”[6] Forbes ranked Pakistan as one of the ‘coolest places’ to visit in 2019.[7] The World Economic Forum’s Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report placed Pakistan in the top 25 per cent of global destinations for its World Heritage sites, which range from the mangroves in the Indus delta, to the Indus Valley Civilization sites including Mohenjo-daro and Harappa.[8]

According to the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2017 released by the World Economic Forum, the direct contribution of travel and tourism to Pakistan’s GDP in 2015 was US$328.3 million, constituting 2.8% of the total GDP.[9] According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, the direct contribution of travel and tourism to Pakistan’s GDP in 2016 was US$7.6 billion (PKR 793.0 billion), constituting 2.7% of the total GDP.[10] By 2025, the government predicts tourism will contribute ₨1 trillion (US$7.1 billion) to the Pakistani economy.[11]

In October 2006, one year after the 2005 Kashmir earthquake, The Guardian released what it described as “the top five tourist sites in Pakistan” to help the country’s tourism industry.[12] The sites included Lahore, the Karakoram Highway, Karimabad and Lake Saiful Muluk. To promote the country’s unique cultural heritage, Pakistan launched the “Visit Pakistan” marketing campaign in 2007. This campaign involved events throughout the year including fairs and religious festivals, regional sporting events, arts and craft shows, folk festivals and openings of historical museums.[13]

In 2013, 565,212 tourists visited Pakistan contributing only $298 million, which has risen to over 1.9 million tourists in 2018.[14] By comparison, Pakistan’s domestic tourism industry is estimated at 50 million tourists who travel in the country on short trips usually between May to August.[14] The largest tourism inflow of tourists are from the United Kingdom, followed by United States, India and China.[15][16]

Addressing a joint press conference in Karachi on Wednesday evening, the medical organizations also requested the President of Pakistan to reconsider the decision to allow Taraweeh and prayer gatherings in the month of Ramadan.

Dr. Atif Hafeez Siddiqui, President, Pakistan Islamic Medical Association, said that the number of patients in Corona has increased by 3,000 in three days and there is no space for patients in the city’s hospitals like Indus, Ojha and Aga Khan Hospitals while the Expo Center The field hospital is also 80% full.

Dr. Atif said that as fast as it is growing, we have to think, people have to support us without leaving their homes.

“We think the business community is upset but can’t come back to life if there is health. We will work.”

Dr. Abdul Bari, CEO of Center Indus Hospital for coronary infected patients in Karachi, said they were not in favor of closing mosques.

He said that there should be adhan from mosques but only the organizers should offer prayers there and Taraweeh is Sunnah. The people are requested to pay their dues at home.

Dr. Qaiser said that the ulema have shown lack of seriousness and how will the SOPs set up to deal with Corona be implemented in the mosques?

It will be too late until it is known that it was violated in such and such a mosque. Therefore, we want the government to look up and ask the scholars to withdraw their decisions.

So we bought spirits from the market and mixed them in water and drank them to check, after which our health deteriorated.

That’s Arslan’s saying. They are the only lucky ones who survived after drinking raw alcohol. While four of his friends have died from drinking raw alcohol.

The incident happened last week in Hyderabad’s second largest city, Hyderabad, when five people were brought to a civil hospital for drinking alcohol. But four people, including two brothers, were killed. Arslan says he used to drink alcohol daily but shops were closed so he experimented.

The measures have been taken in connection with the lockdown in Pakistan. In response, some people have resorted to drugs, homeopathic remedies or spirits.

Lockdown and bar closures

The example of Sindh can be taken in this regard. The provincial government closed bars on a one-day notice in a lockdown to curb the spread of the corona virus in Sindh.

The closure continued to expand and, according to the current order, the closure will continue until April 30.

According to the Sindh Excise and Taxation Department, there are 21 wholesalers across the province who serve liquor in bars, hotels and events. There are 159 licensed pubs, most of which are located in Karachi and sell liquor to non-Muslims.
Image caption The Sindh government had ordered the bar to remain closed till April 2, but now it has been extended till April 30.
Increase in demand on international lines

Demand for this specialty has grown significantly as a result of recent corporate scandals in many parts of the world. Globally, bars are open in some countries and closed in others. Even though the bar is closed, alcohol can be bought in some countries, but it is advisable to avoid decorating wine parties.

In the United States alone, alcohol sales have risen by 50 percent. According to a report in Forbes Magazine, in the days of the plague, when all businesses were in decline, the liquor business was not only thriving but growing.
‘Consumption high in Sindh’

There are liquor factories in the name of Murree Beaver, Quetta Distillery and Mehran Distillery in Pakistan. Sindh province, owner of Murree Beaver, said that only 60% of the production of his beaver consumes in Sindh province.

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan, the number of Hindu voters in Sindh province is more than 3 million. The other minority is the Christian community, while the Parsis and Sikhs are also settled. Most of the liquor licenses in the province are held by Hindus while some Christians in Karachi also sell liquor.

According to the information obtained from the owners and managers of pubs in Karachi, 300 liters of liquor is sold daily from the pub located at Malir 15. In Issa Nagri, where the Christian population is high, 500 to 600 liters are sold daily. Thus, up to 300 liters of wine is taken from Memon Goth brewery.

According to the owner of a bar located in the main commercial center of the city, the bars near the working class and the poorer sections have higher sales. Consumers often shop for themselves, which leads to more sales of ‘Poe and Pint,’ a half-liter bottle.

According to wine owners, the sale of wine brands is based on the season. As it is hot now, there will be more sales of ‘gin’ brand and ‘beer’, while ‘vodka’ is more preferred in winter.
The trend of hoarding before Ramadan

All bars in Pakistan are closed during the month of Ramadan. According to the owners, sales increase by 40% before the arrival of Ramadan. The reason, he says, is that people already stock up on alcohol for fear of closure.

During Ramadan, the supply continues through bootleggers or liquor dealers, but the price is higher than normal prices.
Lockdown and daily users

The bars were closed on a day’s notice in the lockdown. According to a user, his bootlegger informed him and he ordered some goods. Little did they know that the lockdown would be prolonged.

Another customer said that he also thought that the shops would open in a few days. But the closure lasted longer.

A consumer said that a one-liter bottle of Pakistani gin, which was available at Rs 1,500 to Rs 1,700, is currently selling at Rs 7,000. While foreign brands are selling at least Rs 10,000 to Rs 18,000 a liter. “Alcohol prices have never risen so much in the past,” he said.

Some users said they were using “alternatives” that included drugs.
